What Is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation—particularly the prefrontal cortex. It is FDA-approved and widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating depression and other neurological conditions, especially when traditional treatments haven’t worked.

TMS does not require anesthesia, does not involve systemic side effects, and patients can typically return to normal activities immediately after each session.

Conditions Treated

TMS is FDA-approved and/or clinically supported for treating:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Anxiety disorders (off-label but supported in clinical practice)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (off-label, emerging research)

Who It’s For

TMS may be appropriate for you if:

  • You’ve tried two or more antidepressants with little or no relief
  • You experience side effects from medications that interfere with daily life
  • You prefer a non-pharmacological treatment for depression
  • You are not currently in a psychiatric crisis (e.g., active psychosis or mania)

TMS is typically recommended for adults, but some adolescents may qualify after psychiatric evaluation. It’s a safe option even for individuals who are medication-sensitive or managing complex medication regimens.

  • You may feel light tapping or tingling—most patients experience no pain
  • You can drive yourself home afterward
